The new BMW X1, part of BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle X Series, and BMW 2 Series have both been named 2017 IIHS Top Safety Picks. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) puts vehicles through rigorous crash tests and only gives this designation to vehicles that get a rating of “good” in all five categories.
The categories tested by the IIHS crash tests are small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. This is the second year in a row the BMW X1 has been named a Top Safety Pick, and the 2017 version improves on the previous model year by adding a more spacious interior, better fuel economy, and updated technology.
The BMW 2 Series has been recognized by the IIHS every year since it was introduced in 2014. Both vehicles have been praised for their body and structure design. The IIHS also gave fair ratings to BMW’s Forward Collision Warning technology, which they found reduced impact speed by an average of 10 mpg in the 12mph test and 7 mph in the 25 mph test.
These new BMW vehicles come with a variety of safety features and services like BMW Assist eCall, TeleService, and available Lane Departure Warning and other active safety features.
